![]() When using two wax rings, the first should be placed on the closet flange and the second should be placed on top of the first wax ring. Using two wax rings can provide a better, more effective seal than just one wax ring and help ensure that the toilet is installed securely. This is usually recommended when the flange (the part of the toilet that connects to the pipe in the floor) is not near the floor, or the flange is an extra high model. When installing a wax ring, make sure to push it in firmly and to allow the wax to naturally fill any spaces. Additionally, it is important to measure the toilet horn to ensure that the wax ring fits correctly and completely. It is always a good idea to use a proper gauge of wax ring to ensure a solid seal. If the toilet is just being serviced or moved, then one wax ring should be adequate. If your toilet is being replaced, then you would likely need two wax rings in order to ensure a proper seal. ![]() The answer to this question depends on the circumstances. If the thickness of a wax ring is not correct, it may not fit tightly to the drain opening, which could cause a leak. The most important factor when selecting a wax ring is that it is the correct size for the toilet in question. Generally, the thicker wax rings are marketed with extra wax for improved performance however, this does not necessarily make them better. A thicker wax ring can provide a tighter seal between the toilet bowl and the drain pipe and prevent leaks. Why does the wax ring on my toilet keep failing?Ī thicker wax ring is generally better when replacing a toilet because it provides a more reliable and effective seal that helps reduce the chances of a leak. ![]() Should you caulk around the bottom of a toilet?.What can I use instead of a wax ring for my toilet?.How long should a toilet wax ring last?.Should I put the wax ring on the toilet or the flange?.What toilet seal do plumbers recommend?.Can you use 2 wax rings when installing a toilet?.Also if the tile does have a high spot at the set of the toilet, that is a spot prone to chipping. Make sure the plastic isolator is to the ceramic with the washer on top of that and not any ceramic to metal contact. Then compress the wax ring the rest of the way and snug down the flange bolts. When all is ready, then I lower the toilet the rest of the way until the marks are seen on the shim or shims that are to be left in place after all other shims are removed. I usually add shims all around when setting the toilet, that way the wax ring is never fully compressed while I hover over the toilet setting the nuts on the flange bolts, setting the tank, adjusting it square to the wall. mark the floor and the depth the shims are set. When adding shims, place them so they will level the seat if needed. There are 3 places to work with, the front and the areas behind the floor mounting bolts. Place shims where the ceramic is the strongest. If it rock to ANY degree shim it so it does not. Before setting the wax ring and before setting the tank, place the toilet in position to see how it sets. Ideally the toilet should be set level, and if the floor is level and flat, it makes it so much easier. I usually go for more than an inch above the finished floor, since the recess is about 3/4" deep. The trick is build up enough thickness to give the toilet something to compress in the recess in the bottom of the toilet. I have ever only seen, and done myself, doubling up of wax rings when needed or using a extra thick in some cases, or using a thick and thin combined if that is what was needed.
